  1. 1 · What failed

    Selected in 1939 to integrate West Virginia University's graduate mathematics program, she left after a single session to start a family and did not complete the degree; the research-mathematician career she wanted had no open door then, and she taught school for over a decade instead.

  2. 2 · What it cost

    Fourteen years between the degree and the door opening, worked on a teaching salary; then a computing pool kept separate from the colleagues whose missions depended on it.

  3. 3 · What worked

    Hired in 1953 into the segregated West Area Computing pool at Langley under Dorothy Vaughan, she computed the trajectory for Alan Shepard's 1961 Freedom 7 flight, and before John Glenn's 1962 orbital flight Glenn asked for her to re-run the computer's numbers by hand — 'If she says they're good, then I'm ready to go.' She retired in 1986, after 33 years.

  4. 4 · The lesson

    Employment is a route through work, not a waiting room: the mathematics she kept sharp across a decade of teaching was exactly what the space program hired, and the credit followed the competence — decades later, but it followed.
