    He put about $300,000 into the Paige typesetting machine, which ran only rarely and never reached market, while his publishing house, Charles L. Webster & Co., failed in 1894; that year he declared bankruptcy, owing roughly $80,000.

  2. 2 · What it cost

    The fortune went in his late fifties; the recovery was years of touring and writing on other continents, at an age when his contemporaries were stopping work.

    The traded skill paid the owned ventures' debts: a round-the-world lecture tour begun in 1895, and the books that came of it, repaid his creditors in full — though the bankruptcy had legally cleared him of the obligation.
